Worth 3D Printing.

What everyday items are actually worth 3D printing?

The things worth printing are the ones you cannot buy in the exact shape you need: a phone or tablet stand at your angle, desk and drawer organisers sized to your actual space, custom-branded accessories, and — the most useful of all — replacement parts for things that are otherwise fine. Printing wins where the item is bespoke, discontinued or low quantity. It loses to the shop where the item is mass-produced and standard.

Most articles on this subject list things you could print. This one is about things worth printing — because the honest answer is that plenty of everyday objects are cheaper and better bought from a shop, and pretending otherwise wastes your money and our time.

The test is simple: does the thing need to be a specific shape that nobody sells? If yes, printing is often the only sensible route. If no, buy it. Here are five categories where the answer is usually yes.

1. Phone, Tablet and Desk Stands

Stands are the classic case because the right angle is personal. A stand set for your desk height, your screen, your viewing angle — with a cable channel exactly where your cable actually runs — is not something a retailer stocks.

They also print quickly and use very little material, which makes them one of the cheapest useful things you can order. For businesses, the same part with a logo embossed into the base becomes a branded desk item at a fraction of what custom moulding would cost — the reasoning behind our corporate gifts work.

2. Storage and Drawer Organisers

The strongest use case on this list, and the least glamorous. Drawer inserts, tool trays, cable tidies, spice-rack risers, workshop bin dividers — all of them are shape problems. A generic organiser wastes the awkward corners; one printed to your actual internal measurements does not.

Print them in PETG if they will take weight or knocks, PLA if they just need to sit there and look tidy. This scales up too: workshops order jigs, fixtures and part trays on exactly the same logic.

3. Kitchen and Pantry Storage

Pantry risers, tin dispensers, cupboard dividers, herb-jar racks, cookie cutters — useful, quick, and sized to a cupboard nobody else has.

An honest limit, because the internet gets this wrong. A printed part is built in layers, and those layers leave microscopic grooves that trap food residue and bacteria — grooves a dishwasher will not reliably clean, and a hot cycle can warp PLA anyway. "Food-safe filament" describes the raw plastic, not the finished part. So: dry storage, organisers and single-use shapes like cookie cutters, yes. Anything that holds wet food repeatedly, gets washed daily, or touches heat — buy it instead. We will tell you that before you order, not after.

4. Custom Accessories and Keepsakes

Keychains, badge holders, bag charms, event giveaways, awards, figurines and display pieces. Here the whole point is that the object is specific to a person, a team or an occasion — which is precisely where mass production cannot follow.

Small runs are the sweet spot. Fifty branded keychains for an event has no tooling cost when printed, and the design can change up to the day you press go. Bigger recognition pieces sit under custom awards.

5. Replacement Parts (the Best Reason of All)

A drawer knob, a curtain bracket, a chair glide, a fridge shelf clip, a washing-machine detergent-drawer catch. One small plastic component fails and the manufacturer either does not sell it separately or discontinued the model years ago — so a perfectly good appliance becomes rubbish over a part worth a few dirhams.

This is the single most satisfying thing we print. Send a photo of the broken part next to a ruler, or the two halves, and it can usually be modelled and reprinted — often stronger than the original, because we can choose a better material than the one the manufacturer costed down to. That is reverse engineering, and it works on parts far larger than a drawer knob too.

What Printing Is Honestly Not Good For

To save you a wasted enquiry:

  • Anything mass-produced and standard. A plain phone case, a normal cup, a standard screw — the shop is cheaper and better.
  • Parts under sustained high heat. PLA softens around 60 °C. A part left in a parked car in a Dubai August will deform. ASA or nylon if it must live outdoors or hot.
  • Anything load-bearing where failure is dangerous. Printed parts have layer planes, which are directional weak points.
  • Repeated-contact food and drink items. As above.

What material is best for everyday 3D printed items?

PLA for anything decorative or indoors that just needs to hold its shape — it prints cleanly and costs least. PETG when the item takes weight, knocks or moisture, such as organisers, brackets and replacement parts. ASA or nylon if it will sit outdoors or somewhere hot, because PLA softens at around 60 °C and the UAE reaches that inside a parked car.

Are 3D printed everyday items durable enough for real use?

For most household and office use, yes — a PETG organiser or bracket will outlast the reason you needed it. The caveat is direction: printed parts are strong across the layers and weaker between them, so a part loaded the wrong way can split along a layer line. We orient parts for the load they will actually see.

Are 3D printed kitchen items food safe?

Not reliably, and we would rather say so. The layer grooves in a printed part trap food residue and bacteria, and cannot be sanitised dependably in a dishwasher — and hot cycles can warp PLA. Food-safe filament refers to the raw plastic, not the finished part. Printed dry storage, organisers and cookie cutters are fine; anything that repeatedly holds wet food or gets washed daily should be bought, not printed.

Can you help if I only have a photo of a broken part?

Yes. A clear photo with a ruler or caliper in frame is usually enough to model a small part, and the broken pieces themselves are better still. For anything complex or precise we 3D scan the original instead — see reverse engineering.

How long does a small 3D printed item take?

Most small items print in roughly 30 minutes to 4 hours of machine time. Realistically the turnaround depends far more on the design and queue than the printing itself — simple items from a ready file often go out same or next working day.
